New Facebook Fan Page Features and Thoughts

Surprise!  Facebook has a new Fan Page look and feel.

So far the new Facebook Fan Page has received some mixed reviews.

New features I really like:

Facebook Use As Fan Page

  • Email notifications - You can now get an email every time someone comments or posts to your wall.  Finally!

Facebook New Fan Page - Email Notifications

Things I don't like so much:

  • New "most interesting" sorting of the wall posts - Each person who visits your page and views the wall with the "Everyone" sort will see a different post order.  The order is based on some sort of "most interesting" score that they receive.  Note the date order below.

When logged in as me (Jason):

When logged in as ProWorks (the Fan Page):

When Loyan views the page:

So that's pretty crazy.

The good news is that you can preview the changes before making the switch to make sure your tabs and everything looks good.  If it doesn't look good you have until March 11th to fix it because that's the date everyone will be switched over no matter what.

Take a look at these links for more information about the new Facebook Fan Page and how it may affect you.

What do you think of the new fan page?

Jason, I couldn't agree more with your observations. I wonder if there will be other features that will be rolled out in March.

Thanks Rick. Yea, Facebook does seem to have a way of surprising us.

Do you know if Facebook has implemented a way to sort the people who like a fan page? For example, we used a service to get fans and most of them are international and not even close to our target audience. I'd like to remove them so our content is aimed at those individuals and markets that would benefit us most.

Brad, There doesn't appear to be "lists" available when you are logged in as your Fan Page. Perhaps this is something you could do with the Facebook API. I'll take a look and see if that would be accessible via the API. Thanks, Jason

Jason, Thanks for your help. You'd think Facebook would have this feature already. What if an unruly fan uses offensive explicit language, constantly bad mouths and berates a company on their wall or an extreme example could be a stalker for a musician's fan page. There should be options for removing fans and even banning them. Just some thoughts I had on the Fan pages. Again, thanks for your help and let me know if you find anything in the API. -Brad

Hey Brad, If someone is being offensive etc and you would like to remove them as a fan here are instructions (for the new facebook page layout) -see Left hand column, click ### people like this (the link in blue) -a popup modal will appear with a list of users who "like" your page (apparently in no particular order-thanks Facebook ;) -click the little "x" next to the user you would like to remove from your page and a nice little message will appear that reads: "You are attempting to remove (Person's name) from this Page. Are you sure you want to remove (Person's Name)" You can remove them or ban them permanently. I typically suggest removing the offender once and if they chose to find your page/come back I just watch them for appropriate interaction (so much easier thanks to the new email notifications- as Jason stated FINALLY) If they abuse the facebook page/group rules again they are banned permanently. Hope this helps! ~Mariah

Great blog post Jason, especially thanks for explaining the bus page/personal page posting

@Maria, Thanks for the info. What I really need is the ability to query our fans by location. I signed up for a "Get More Fans" service thinking more is better, but as I am learning, a quality targeted fan is better that several fans that really don't have an interest in our industry. The majority of fans that we got were from out of the US and we really don't market to that demo, so going through 1000+ fans and removing them individually would be a tedious task which looks like only option I have at this point. Thanks again for your input. -Brad

Is the limiting of seeing all people who like a fan page to just admins something new to these changes or has it always been that way? Is there a way to control that? A member of our band who is not a page admin just joined facebook and is hoping to refresh his memory with the names of some fans. I suppose I can temp add him as an admin, but would rather not. Also (for band at least), I think it's sad to see Events, Music Player and Discography moved from left column because it makes them harder for fans to see. Discography doesn't even seem to be available at all (though it is available for editing)?

I find it interesting the subject and wanted to contribute something that perhaps they might be interested. There is a tool (it's in Spanish) that will help you create your pages without knowledge of fans iframes, all powered wordpress. It is very practical and easy-to-use called FB super fan page, used to create fan pages. regards
