Two social media professionals from the Albany-Corvallis area, Matt Riopelle and Jennifer Grant joined the Social Media for Business group today to lead a discussion titled “Put Down the Megaphone, How to Talk Social.”
The turn out was fantastic. I didn’t do a head count but we did have people standing and sitting on the floor, which I love for all the best reasons.
There is definitely something to be said for giving your peers the stage.
Highlight notes from the session:
- On subject matter: “What would you talk about if you took your customers out for lunch?” ~ JG
- “Turn a bad experience into a positive expereince with transparency.” ~ MR
- On why people follow your business: “We want a backstage pass.” ~ JG
- Google blog search and real-time results are good for finding people related to your market to engage with.
- Jen Grant loves location based social media and FourSquare.com.
I also promised to share a link to the section on Yelp.com on the topic of responding to reviews (good and bad): Yelp on responding to reviews
Did you attend? What were some of your favorite points and takeaways?
The broadband connectivity is always mind-boggling but remembering that simple, polite social norms still apply is a good guide. Thanks!

The technology is changing way quick. That people want to be appreciated is not changing any time soon.
Thanks for having us Loyan and Jason– The turn out was fantastic! And I always enjoy this group of business minds. I vote for an all day round-table someday soon.

Jen,
I’d love a big round-table. I want to hear more about things that people have done that they thought worked well or little insights they get by trying stuff in this space. Basically, war stories and the learning that came out of that.
Oh, and thanks to Jen and Matt for leading the conversation. It was a great group and lots of fun.
Thats a great idea Jen. Do you think you could kick it off over at http://www.willametteinnovators.com/group/socialmediaforbusiness? I know its not as cool as an in person round table would be, but it a way we can start trading stories right away. And it never has to stop!
I ask you to start the discussion there because your profile photo is much more attractive than mine is. We need to raise the bar a bit!
This was a great event. Thanks Matt and Jen.Sorry I had to leave early. I’m down for a virtual round table discussion. Can we edit it and have an eBook to share with our customers?
