The Facebook Fan Page Vanity URL is a key piece to cross-promoting your Fan Page with the world on your cards, website, receipts, or wherever its important to have something short and memorable for people to remember.
Unfortunately, its not super obvious where to set it.
Clearly someone else has already blogged this so I found a decent description that includes guidelines and photos here: How To Set Up The Vanity Url For Your Facebook Fan Page. However, I felt that it was a lot of text for something fairly simple. So I paraphrased it. The results are below.
1. Go to http://www.facebook.com/username/
2. Click “Set a username for your Pages.”
3. Select the page from the drop down you want to set.
4. Type the name into the text box to the right of the page selection drop down.
5. Click “Check Availability”
6. Click “OK”
Done. Note that once you set it you cannot change it. Also, you must have more than 30 fans to do this.
Thanks, Jason, for these clear, simple instructions.
Here’s a link for businesses who, when they go to claim their name for a FB fans pagehave, might have some copyright issues: http://www.facebook.com/help/contact.php?show_form=username_infringement
Thanks Bill! Good stuff.
When I go to http://www.facebook.com/usernames it prompts me to create a profile. I have already created a fan page, am I doing something wrong?
Thanks,
Crystal
Crystal,
Did you click the “Set a username for your Pages” link at the bottom of the page?
Thanks,
Jason
Dear Jason,
I have a facebook page but when I got to http://www.facebook.com/usernames , just as with Crystal it prompts me to create a profile. It also says there that pages should not have a profile. What can I do to get a vanity url? Thanx!
Look for:
“Set a username for your Pages”
on that page. Its below your profile stuff.
Hmmm.. I get to “check availability” I click.. and nothing.. Help? (this is for a page not my personal account)
Susan
Not sure. I’d say try again later because perhaps Facebook had a bug in the process.
You are selecting a page from the “Page Name:” drop down, right?
